AS a child, hampers meant a pyramid of foodstuff from the supermarket that came in a basket.

When I started work nine years ago, cookie baskets were all the rage.

As festive seasons loomed and hampers piled up on my editor's desk, her team of journalists would take turns to "book" the baskets — picnic, wicker or rattan.

With the gift-giving culture becoming more established among Malaysians, the hamper business is prospering. Do a Google search and countless hamper businesses offering everything from flowers to foodstuff to baked goods will pop up.

Besides supermarket goods, hampers now include fabrics like songket, high-end chocolates, herbal teas and beauty products like soaps.

"For Ramadan and Hari Raya, corporations want to include religious articles like Muslim prayer mats, prayer books, prayer dresses for women and sarongs," said Norma Abdullah Maulad, the owner of Delinur (www.giftdelinur.com), a home-based company based in Kelana Jaya, Petaling Jaya.

Three weeks before Hari Raya and already her home looks like a warehouse, stacked to the brim with boxes, hampers, cookies, dates and containers of all sorts and sizes.

She starts work after sahur and is always busy accepting last-minute orders and arranging deliveries.

On average, she delivers more than 2,000 hampers each season. They cost between RM40 and RM3,000 each.

Her client list is extensive and includes multinational corporations, royalty and prominent politicians. It's also growing, the economic recession notwithstanding.

"I think companies don't slash their budget because it's a one-off thing.

Besides, if you have started giving, you'd want to continue giving every year. Some companies may just give cheaper hampers."

Amilita Zaini, who operates AZ Gift Baskets (www.azgiftbaskets.com.my) from home in Kajang, agreed.

"But there's no budget increase and that makes it tricky for me because every year prices go up," she said. Amilita, who started her business six years ago, caters to a clientele with more prudent budgets — hampers that range from RM120 to RM450.

"Business is picking up. In the past, busy hamper seasons were Hari Raya and Chinese New Year but now, Deepavali and Christmas are also busy seasons.

Individuals buy them too. I recently received an order from a husband in Australia who wanted to give his wife in Kuala Lumpur a gift basket for Hari Raya. No order is too small. I believe small orders will lead to big ones," she said.

Both Delinur and AZ Gift Baskets have online stores but they say people still want to see samples, especially for bulk orders. "It's also a chance for them to customise their hampers so they get something different than what's advertised on the web," said Norma.

"Corporate clients want mock-ups but individuals are more inclined to purchase online," said Amalita.

Norma said quality is most important and believes the reason cookies lose out as gifts is because suppliers don't deliver. "Their samples taste nice but the real deal doesn't. Or they just look pretty but taste bland. You can't get away with such practices."

Amalita agreed that looks don't cut it. "If you send nice-looking but tasteless cookies, you can be sure you won't get repeat customers. Staples for hampers will always be food items because there is a sense of wholesomeness to them," said Norma.

Norma designs her own PVC boxes which look like leather because it's the current favourite as they look exclusive and are reusable.

"Customers are looking for something they can use long after the cookies have been consumed. So I have watch compartments, banana bowls, magazine boxes, poly-resin containers with a vintage look and treasure chests which look good in the living room," she said.

Amalita said her customers also like water hyacinth and bamboo boxes and baskets. But yes, the leather look-alike modern boxes are popular.

Shareen Izuriawaty, who started her hamper business with a friend last year, prefers sending hampers with non-food items "because you may not know a person's food taste". For last Chinese New Year, she packed in wine glasses, candles, vanilla sticks and diffusers, table runners and cherry blossom decorative items.

"The basket can be a decor at home or recycled for another hamper," she said. The duo doesn't have an Internet store but their samples can be viewed on Facebook.

"I encourage people to give household items because they last longer and are more useful, and I think customers now are more open to that idea. Customisation is also big. If the receiver is a gym buff, we can give a tumbler, for example.

On the other end of the gift spectrum is one that is more design-driven but also speaks of festivity.

34 Studio (34gifts.com), a Bangsar-based design studio, just launched its Ayu range, a collection of batik and songket-inspired functional items like toiletry bags, coin purses and folders.

"Most corporations want functional, not merely decorative items... something that the receiver can use daily. And their demand don't fluctuate that much because in the end, each company wants to stand out and our designs can reinforce their brands," said founder Shuenn Kee Chong.

The company, formed by designers, pays intention to design and workmanship while promoting a range of local accessories. "We think that batik is underused and people don't know enough about songket," said Chong.

Priced from RM20 to RM250 per item, Chong says metallic leather goods with songket details are a hit among corporate customers, while batik accessories are more popular as Hari Raya gifts.

"I'd like to think we pack a piece of Malaysia in the range, something that speaks of our heritage and culture."

1. In the event that any products become unavailable at the time of production, Delinur reserves the right to substitute them with similar products of equal or greater value.

2. Any cancellation upon confirmation will be subjected to 50% cancellation fee.

3. We will endeavour to deliver your gift on the date requested or we will notify you upon your order if we cannot fulfill your order.

4. Deliveries to Klang Valley will be made free of charge. Deliveries outside of Klang Valley will be charged according to area.
